How to Fix Compressed WhatsApp and Social Media Photos
Fix blurry, blocky photos compressed by WhatsApp, Facebook or email: find a better copy, remove JPEG artifacts with AI and share without losing quality.

A cousin scans an old family photo and sends it to the group chat. It gets forwarded, screenshotted and posted. By the time it reaches you, it's small, blocky and soft. Messaging apps and social networks compress images to save data, and every resend can make it worse.
What compression does to photos
- Reduced resolution: images are shrunk.
- JPEG artifacts: blocky squares, especially in skies and skin.
- Banding: smooth gradients become steps.
- Smeared detail: hair and fabric texture disappear.
- Color shifts: subtle color loss.
Step 1: Ask for the original
The best fix is a better file. Ask the person who scanned it to send the original:
- As a file or document in WhatsApp (not as a photo).
- By AirDrop or email with "actual size".
- Via a shared cloud album or folder.
If you can get the print itself, recapture it (see how to scan old photos).
Step 2: Fix it with AI
If the compressed copy is all you have, AI enhancement can remove blocks, restore smooth gradients and rebuild detail. In Refixo, tap Restore: compression artifacts are reduced, faces and details sharpened, the image enhanced and colors corrected. If the photo is old, damage and fading are fixed in the same pass.
Step 3: Share without compressing again
- Send restored photos as documents in WhatsApp.
- Use shared albums in iCloud Photos or Google Photos.
- Avoid screenshots of photos; share the photo itself.
- Choose the original or high-quality option when sharing to social media.

Set up a family photo hub
To stop the cycle, create one shared album or folder for scanned family photos, where everyone uploads originals. It saves a lot of restoration work later (see organizing digital family photos).

How to tell if a photo has been compressed
Zoom in on a smooth area like the sky or a cheek. If you see faint square blocks (often 8×8 pixels), stair-stepped gradients or "mosquito" noise around edges, the photo has been compressed. Check the file size, too: a full-page photo under 200 KB has almost certainly been compressed heavily. The more of these signs you see, the more valuable it is to track down the original.
Frequently asked questions
Why do photos look blurry on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp compresses images to reduce file size, which lowers resolution and adds artifacts.
How do I send a photo on WhatsApp without losing quality?
Send it as a document or file instead of as a photo, or use the HD option where available.
Can AI fix compression artifacts?
Yes. AI enhancement smooths blocks and reconstructs detail, though a better original is always preferable.
Do screenshots reduce photo quality?
Often, yes. Screenshots capture the screen resolution, not the original, and may include compression from the app.
